Michael built up his expertise in intellectual property, particularly for patentable user interfaces in both the US and Europe, through his work with the founders and inventors at Tegic Communications; in his role as Program Director of IP Portfolio and Strategy, including coordinating litigation discovery and technical defense strategy; and eventually helping evaluate and transition Tegic's IP assets to Nuance Communications.

Legal agreements prevent disclosure of any details from patent infringement lawsuits; but, in brief, Designer Software was retained for Michael to serve as a technical consultant and/or expert witness, based on his deep knowledge of the invention space, key people, and competitors for multi-modal text input and mobile instant messaging. He has collaborated with multiple law firms to successfully defend three major mobile phone manufacturers against patent infringement claims.
